Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive airways disease

Treatment: Respiratory failure - compilation

It defined as an acute decline in respiratory functions manifested as severely worsening dyspnoea, cough and sputum production from the symptoms baseline. It triggered by an infection, airborne pollutants, and/or other factors (smoking).

It is the failure to provide alveolar ventilation to maintain a normal arterial PO2 regardless of the PCO2 levels. It is a sign of severe and potentially complicates COPD, especially the hypercapnic form. 1
